This day is meant to be joyous, but due to the circumstances that we are facing in this country, two severe illnesses, racism and COVID-19, celebrations will not be going on as usual during these times. RSVP to join us for this Friday's Juneteenth discussion at bit.ly/PLANwellness. | | | | | | | | LGBTQ Rights: This morning, in a landmark 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court affirmed that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act protects LGBTQ individuals from being fired on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Kids Against Racism Rally: Local community activist Kumei led a powerful Kids Against Racism Rally this past Sunday in North Las Vegas. More than 100 children and their parents marched together against racism and police brutality.
Kumei is also an artist, and has been making waves in the community by making free Black Lives Matter bracelets, and donating to the Vegas Freedom Fund. We are honored to be in community with her, and behind her as she leads. DACA: The Supreme Court could release a decision on DACA anytime; the next decision day is this upcoming Thursday. Follow us on social media and the hashtag #HomeIsHereNV for rapid response and news on any decision made about DACA and President Trump’s effort to end the program. Military Expansion: This week the Senate Armed Services committee met to markup this year's National Defense Authorization Act, and decided not to include the expansion of Naval Air Station Fallon and the Nevada Test and Training Range. This decision prevents over one million acres of land from being sacrificed to military bombing. | | | | | | Repeal the Backpack Ban: In response to the Black Lives Matter protests, the City of Las Vegas passed an ordinance (with no notice to the public) to ban protestors from using back packs. This is a direct attack on Nevadans who are using their voices and 1st amendment rights to advocate for their communities and call for the end of police terror. It is also a pathway to racial profiling and stop and frisk which will cause many more Nevadans to have encounters with the police that could end tragically. This ban is also unfair to parents, people with illnesses, or otherwise need to have a backpack or bag with food, supplies, and medical items. The City of Las Vegas backpack ban ordinance is a disaster and must be repealed. | | 1. Make a call or send an email to Mayor Goodman. 2.
